ما أنس لا أنس يوم الدّير مجلسنا
ونحنwhile we فيin نعمdelights توفيsurpass علىbeyond النعمthe delights
ونحن في نعم توفي على النعم
Whatever I may forget, I will not forget our gathering at the monastery that day,
I do not forget, I do not forget the day in the monastery and our gathering,
While we were amid delights surpassing all delights.
While we were enjoying blessings, fulfilling blessings.
وافيتهI reached it غلساًin the predawn gloom فيamong فتيةyoung men زهرradiant
وافيته غلساً في فتية زهر
ماwhatever شئتyou wished منof أدبrefinement فيهمin them ومنand of كرمgenerosity
ما شئت من أدب فيهم ومن كرم
I reached it in the predawn gloom among radiant youths,
I met him cheerful among the youths of blossoms,
Who had all the refinement and generosity you could wish for.
Whatever manners and generosity you wish in them.
والفجرand dawn يتلوfollows الدّجىthe darkness فيin اثرthe wake of زهرتهits radiance
والفجر يتلو الدّجى في اثر زهرته
كطاعنlike a spearman بسنانwith a spearpoint إثرin pursuit of منهزمa routed man
كطاعن بسنان إثر منهزم
And dawn followed the darkness in the wake of its radiance,
And dawn follows darkness in the trail of its flowers,
Like a spearman pursuing a routed man with his spearpoint.
Like a swordsman on the track of the defeated.
فلمso did not نزلwe cease بمطيّwith the mounts of الراحwine نعملهاwe keep them moving
فلم نزل بمطيّ الراح نعملها
محدوةurged on by song بينناamong us بالزمرby piping والنغمand melodies
محدوة بيننا بالزمر والنغم
So we kept the mounts of wine moving,
We did not stop riding the mounts of comfort,
Urged on among us by piping and melodies,
Trotting among us with music and tunes,
حتىuntil اثنيناwe turned back ونورand the light of الشمسthe sun يطردهdrives it away
حتى اثنينا ونور الشمس يطرده
جنحa wing منof الليلthe night فيamid جيشan army منof الظلمshadows
جنح من الليل في جيش من الظلم
Until we turned back, while the sunlight was driven away
Until the two of us were turned away and the sun was chased off
By a wing of night amid an army of shadows.
By wings of night in an army of darkness.
وليسand there was not فيناamong us لفعلbecause of the effect of الخندريسthe aged wine بناupon us
وليس فينا لفعل الخندريس بنا
منanyone who تستقلcould support بهhim ساقa leg علىon قدمa foot
من تستقل به ساق على قدم
And none among us, such was the aged wine's effect on us,
And we had no power for frivolity between us,
Had a leg that could support him upright on a foot.
No foot independent of the other.
