ء بغير جرم كان منّا
O you who have persisted in estrangement,
O you who insisted on estrangement
without any offense on our part.
Without any crime from us
أخطرbring to mind بذكركin your memory عندwhen فكركyour reflection كيـhow (continued)
أخطر بذكرك عند فكرك كيـ

Recall, when you reflect, how

we are, and how we once were.

قcompletion of 'disloyalty' هماthe two of them أزالاthey both removed الملكsovereignty عنّاfrom us
ق هما أزالا الملك عنّا
Indeed, estrangement and disloyalty
Division and resentment
have both stripped us of sovereignty.
Destroyed our kingdom
وأراهماand I see them both لمdid not يتركاthey both leave
وأراهما لم يتركا
فيon الأرضthe earth مؤتلفينtwo in harmony منّاof us
في الأرض مؤتلفين منّا
And I see that they have not left
And I see they left
two of us in harmony on earth.
No harmonious ones among us
لاdo not تحسبنّsuppose (emphatic) تودديmy affection
لا تحسبنّ توددي
الاanything but محافظةpreserving ties وضنّاand reluctance to part
الا محافظة وضنّا
Do not think my affection
Do not reckon my affection
anything but loyalty and reluctance to part.
Is just courtesy from us
لمdid not يغنbe independent عنّيof me صاحبa companion
لم يغن عنّي صاحب
الاexcept that وعنهand without him كنتI was أغنىmore independent
الا وعنه كنت أغنى
No companion ever did without me
No friend helped me
but I had still less need of him.
Unless I was more helpful to him
واذاand if أساءhe did wrong فلستthen I am not أحمـI bear (continued)
واذا أساء فلست أحمـ
ـلcompletion of 'I bear' فيin الضميرthe heart عليهagainst him ضغناa grudge
ـل في الضمير عليه ضغنا
And if he wrongs me, I do not bear
And if he does wrong I do not
a grudge against him in my heart.
Harbor any grudge in my heart
يفنىperishes الذيthat which يقعarises التنافـrivalry (continued)
يفنى الذي يقع التنافـ
ـسcompletion of 'rivalry' بينناbetween us فيهover it ونفنىand we perish
ـس بيننا فيه ونفنى
What will perish is the object of rivalry
What comes between us
between us—and we too will perish.
In competition will perish, and we will perish
