ياO غائباًabsent one لمdid not أخنهI betray him
يا غائباً لم أخنه
بالبعدthrough separation انif لمdid not يخنّيhe betrays me
بالبعد ان لم يخنّي
O absent one whom I have not betrayed
O absent one whom I did not betray
through separation, if he has not betrayed me.
With distance if he did not betray me
زادincreased الجوىlove’s anguish بكbecause of you قرباin nearness
زاد الجوى بك قربا
لمّاwhen تباعدتyou drew away منّيfrom me
لمّا تباعدت منّي
Love’s anguish grew nearer because of you
Yearning for you brought you closer
when you drew away from me.
When you moved farther from me
كأنماas though سرتyou journeyed نحويtoward me
كأنما سرت نحوي
وانمّاand yet only سرتyou journeyed عنّيaway from me
وانمّا سرت عنّي
As though you had journeyed toward me,
As if you came towards me
and yet you had only journeyed away from me.
While in fact you went away from me
