نداماي ان شطّت بي الدار عنكم

نداماي ان شطّت بي الدار عنكم

بما قدّر الرحمن في سابق الحكم

بما قدّر الرحمن في سابق الحكم

My drinking companions, if my dwelling has taken me far from you,

I regret that the house has been emptied of you

Through what the Most Merciful ordained in His prior decree,

By what the Most Merciful had ordained in preceding destiny

ودارت كؤوس الهم لي بعد فقدكم

ودارت كؤوس الهم لي بعد فقدكم

ودارت كؤوس بينكم بابنة الكرم

ودارت كؤوس بينكم بابنة الكرم

And cups of sorrow have gone round for me after losing you,

And the cups of sorrow turned to me after losing you

While cups have gone round among you with the daughter of the vine,

While the cups revolved among you, O daughter of generosity

فاخلوا مكاناً بين نفسين منكم

فاخلوا مكاناً بين نفسين منكم

تحيّونه عنّي وتسمونه باسمي

تحيّونه عنّي وتسمونه باسمي

Then leave a place empty between two of you;

So spare a place between two souls among you

Greet it on my behalf and call it by my name.

That you greet on my behalf and name it with my name

وقولوا لمن غنّاكم فليغنّ لي

وقولوا لمن غنّاكم فليغنّ لي

بصوتي على ما أحدث الدهر من غشمي

بصوتي على ما أحدث الدهر من غشمي

And tell whoever sang for you to sing for me,

And say to whoever sang to you, let him sing to me

In my voice, of the injustice time has done me:

With my voice for what time has unjustly done to me

كفاك بحق اللَه ما قد ظلمتني

كفاك بحق اللَه ما قد ظلمتني

فهذا مقام المستجير من الظلم

فهذا مقام المستجير من الظلم

Enough, for God's sake, of the wrong you have done me!

Enough by God for what injustice you have done me

For this is the station of one seeking refuge from injustice.

صبرت ولا والله ما بي جلادة

صبرت ولا والله ما بي جلادة

على الصبر لكنّي صبرت على رغمي

على الصبر لكنّي صبرت على رغمي

I have endured; no, by God, I have no strength

I was patient but no, by God, I have no endurance

To endure—but I endured against my will.

For patience, yet I was patient in spite of myself
