I saw at parting, when
When parting came upon us, I saw
it was decreed, to my ruin and ill fortune,
Four things unmatched in beauty:
أربعةfour ماnot لهاfor them شبيهan equal
فيمنin the one who بهfor him صبوتيmy love ووجديand my longing
four things that have no equal
The softness of your cheeks, the darkness of your moles,
in the one for whom I feel love and longing:
The pearls of your words, the pearls of your tears,
منof درّpearls لفظspeech ودرّand pearls دمعtears
ودرّand pearls ثغرmouth; teeth ودرّand pearls عقدa necklace
pearls of speech and pearls of tears,
The rubies of your lips, the pearls of your wrists.
and pearls of teeth and pearls of a necklace.
Alas! My aching heart
فآهso, ah! منfrom لوعةanguish بقلبيin my heart

Ah, the anguish in my heart,
Is only intensified by distance, hot coals and fire.
to which distance adds the heat of flame.
