May a morning cloud's downpour water the prayer ground of Damascus,
From every rent cloud pouring down water.
ففيهfor in it مثوىresting place حبيبa beloved ماnot مررتI passed بهby it
إلاexcept that توهمتI imagined فيهwithin it بعضsome of أعضائيmy limbs
For in it is a beloved's resting place; never have I passed by it
Without imagining some of my own limbs within it.
أظلّI remain أشتمهI breathe in its scent طوراًat times وألثمهand I kiss it
كأنas though تربتهits soil تشفيheals منfrom الداءdisease
I linger, now breathing in its scent, now kissing it,
As though its soil could cure disease.
فإنand if يكنbe ماءwater عينيmy eye قلّhas dwindled ساكبهits flow
فإنماthen only نشّفتهhas dried it up نارfire أحشائيmy entrails
And if the water of my eye flows but little,
It is only the fire in my entrails that has dried it up.
