ولمّا اجتمعنا للتفرّق سلمت
سلامa greeting فراقof farewell لاnot سلامa greeting تلاقof reunion
سلام فراق لا سلام تلاق
And when we met to part, I offered
When we met to part, I bid farewell -
a farewell greeting, not a greeting of reunion.
A farewell of parting, not a greeting of union.

So I adorned her neck with what longing had strung:
I excelled in arranging the pearls of youth,
pearls of tears in necklaces of embrace.
Unique tears on necklaces of embrace.

تسيل بأجفان لنا ومآقي
Oh, if only our two souls flowed in our tears,
If only our spirits would flow in our tears
streaming through our eyelids and the corners of our eyes.
That trickle from our eyelids and sorrows,

اذا جدّ بالاحباب وشك فراق
For the lovelorn may relish parting with his own soul
For the lover may savor the parting of his soul
when imminent parting bears down upon loved ones.
When he is serious about his beloved and fears separation.
