Were it not for your genius, I would not have mourned your youth.

You are stricken by this, and we by that.

If your death alarmed your people, it was only

That they feared for hopes dying in your wake.

They were bereaved of them; their lifespan matched yours,

And Time announced their death the day it announced yours.

No lightning flash remained on the horizon of hope

That death did not fold away when it folded you away.

    أدبرت عنه وما جنيت جناكا

    O Jean, this garden—your garden—lies withered;

You turned away from it without gathering your fruit.

Scarcely had its fruit drawn near for you to grasp it

With both hands, when your hands let it slip.

O raiser of generations from their tombs

In Baalbek—is this, then, your recompense?

You woke them from slumber after centuries,

Only for you to sleep, and your slumber never end.

You restored what Time demolished and brought back the

Kings upon their thrones, as kings.

And brought back the Baals, their temples standing

There, their towers leaning upon one another.

You alone built what nations spent

    Their lifetimes building, to exhaustion.

These strongholds, like those, with their domes,

Their figures and carvings, mirror one another.

So it is as though the Romans and the Greeks had

Gathered all their intellect into yours.

And as though you enslaved those they worshipped, so no

God escaped beyond the bounds of your pleasure.

Indeed, those borne by those solid

Structures never reached your measure of resolve.

You bore them and those structures all alone; no one

But you bore the strongholds of Baalbek.

And you headed for the Seine's cradle to display it to

Nations of the West assembled there.

Nations that saw a wonder in a most wondrous sign:

It was Baalbek, transported by your right hand.

And it was as though envy struck you, a man of the

East—would that the West had been your ransom!

So fate carried off a genius who, had he not been

One of us, would have trodden the celestial spheres with his sandal.

Alas for Lebanon, motionless after your passing,

As still as your heart, unable to stir.

There is no reveller playing in its garden, nor

A moon showing it a laughing face.

No maiden but, like the one you left behind,

Weeps; and every youth has wept like your boy.

And a mourning assembly at the institute of learning,

Convened by young men, companions of your youth.

They scattered pearls upon it as tears, just as

They scattered them as precious words lamenting you.

O neighbor of the great eagle at his tomb,

Did Hugo pass by your grave in tears?

If fresh verse eludes him, I will give him

My verse to soothe the loneliness of your distant abode.

You sent Baalbek westward from us and died

Abroad; our fate sent your resting place abroad too.

Of your handiwork or the sight of you, we have

No lasting trace; your memory must suffice us.

Such is Lebanon's lot: every youth it has

Of lofty intellect is driven away by what drove you away.
