People deem my poetry precious, yet when
People see me as a talented poet, yet
I offer it, I find no buyer for poetry.
When I present it, I see no value in poetry
قدindeed طيبperfumed اللَهGod أنفاسيmy breaths لانفحهمso I may grace them
بهاwith them وماyet not نفحواthey bestowed كفيmy palm بدينارwith a dinar
God has perfumed my breaths, that I might grace them
May God make my breath pleasant when I exhale
With these; yet they have not graced my palm with a dinar.
It is enough that they inhale without paying a dime
وأطفئand I quench النارthe fire فيin اكبادهمtheir livers وأناwhile I
واللَهby God ذوpossessing كبدٍa liver تشوىis roasted علىover نارa fire
And I quench the fire in their livers, while I—
And I extinguish the fire in their livers while I
By God—have a liver roasting over a fire.
By God, have a liver burning with fire

And I dispel anguish from the sorrowful one's heart, yet I have
And I take away the passion from the heart of those in love, yet I have
A heart where anguish sates a ravenous beast's craving.
A heart in which lies passion fulfilling the desire of the reproacher

I am the lute and the lute-player; I delight
I am the lute and the lover made joyous
My listeners by hurting my ribs and my strings.
By hearing the groans of my ribs and strings
ياO أهلpeople of لبنانLebanon لاmay not حيّاًrevive منابتكمyour native soil
غادٍa morning raincloud إذاif متُّI die مظلوماًwronged ولاnor سارa night raincloud
O people of Lebanon, may your native soil never be refreshed
O people of Lebanon, no living thing thrives on your slopes
By morning rain, if I die wronged, nor by rain at night.
When it dies wronged and cheerless

Nor may a foal graze the grass in your pastures
Nor does cattle graze as spoils in your pastures
Except upon the effaced remnants of a dwelling.
Except in the shade of a tent, far from home
عرضتI offered فيin سوقكمyour market روحيmy soul وقدand indeed كسدتit went unsold
فيهاin it وماand not هيis روحيmy soul غيرother than اشعاريmy poems
I offered my soul in your market, but it went unsold
I displayed my soul in your market and it languished
There—and my soul is nothing but my poems.
There though it was none other than my poetry
