يا بعلبك اطوف فيك كأنني

شبحٌ يطوف بمدفن الأجيالِ

O Baalbek, I roam through you as though I were

a ghost roaming the burial ground of generations.

واطلُّ منك على الوجود فلا أرى

في الشرق غير مفاخر الأطلال

And from you I look out upon the world, and see nothing

in the East but the glories of ruins.

ذهب التليد ولا طريف بعده

وعفا الجديدُ فكل شيءٍ بال

The ancestral glory is gone, and no new glory follows it;

and the new has faded, so everything is worn out.

لم يبقَ للاحفاد من أجدادهم

إلا رسوم معاقل ومعالي

Nothing remains for the descendants from their forefathers

except traces of strongholds and noble achievements.

هممٌ طوينَ وما ولدن نظائراً

واماثلٌ درجوا بلا أمثال

Aspirations were folded away and bore no equals,

and eminent men passed away without peers.

وحقيقة مرت وما تركت لنا

إلا مجال توهّمٍ وخيال

And a reality passed, leaving us nothing

but room for illusion and imagination.

ان الأُولى في بعلبك تزاحموا

لعبادة الأوثان والأبعال

Indeed, those who thronged in Baalbek

to worship the idols and the Baals

بلغوا من الدين المسفه فوق ما

بلغ الأولى عبدوا الاله العالي

achieved through the disparaged faith more than

those who worshipped God on high achieved.

فلو ان دين الشرق دين واحد

لوقفت لا أرثي الزمان الخالي

So if the East's faith were a single faith,

I would stand without mourning the bygone age.
