I am one who bears love without complaining

of what my heart endures in loving you.

Torment me with rejection as much as you wish, but

beware my jealousy, for in it lies my ruin.

As for me, by God, if I hear that the full

    moon’s beauty once captivated you,

or see the breeze playing about your

temples, frolicking, at ease with your consent,

or behold the beautiful dawn upon your

lips, winning a sip of their dusky hue,

then farewell is inevitable, and no good

will your weeping do you at the moment of farewell.

O Thurayya, beware of playing with fire

    by provoking my jealousy—beware!

That is a fire that will destroy me; and never,

if I die, will you live on for long.
