وأهلي حولي بين همٍّ وايجاسِ
Her father, a physician, came to examine my ailment,
Her father, a doctor, came to examine my ailment
And my family around me, caught between worry and foreboding.
And my family around me, between anxiety and despair

ويبحث في رأسي وما الداء في راسي
He feels my veins but sees no ailment within them,
He feels my pulse, he does not see the sickness flowing in it
And searches my head, though the ailment is not in my head.
And searches in my head, but the sickness is not in my head

And when he put his stethoscope to my chest and did not
sense my heart beating amid my breaths,
Hear my heart pounding between my breaths

He took my brother aside, grim-faced and despairing,
He was left with my brother, sullen-faced and hopeless
Like a bearer of death-tidings come to announce Kulayb’s death to Jassas.
Like someone who came to announce a calamity to Ghassas

And he told him, “This is a young man whose heart has vanished;
And he said to him, this is a young man whose heart is gone
His condition drives the physician to despair.”
And his condition calls the doctor to despair

أتعرف من ذا لص قلبك في الناسِ
And he returned to comfort me, saying in jest:
And he returned to console me, and jokingly said
“Do you know who among people is this thief of your heart?”
Do you know who, among the people, stole your heart?

لقد سرقت قلبي ثرياك يا آسي
And he turned away from me, angry, when I answered him:
And I turned away from him angrily when I answered him
“Your Thurayya has indeed stolen my heart, O healer.”
Surely you stole my heart, oh Asy
