Egypt and her Sudan, the Wafd and the Nile—
Egypt, her Sudan, the Wafd, and the Nile
all would be offered for Saad, were resurrection assured.
Would be a ransom for Saad, were resurrection assured.

A ransom for him, the East’s own soul—were he redeemed
A ransom for him, the soul of the East—if that soul were ransomed
with Egypt, only the part, not the whole, would be offered.
With Egypt, the part would be offered up for the whole.
لاdo not تنعهannounce his death أيهاO الناعيherald of death إلىto بلدٍa land

Do not announce his death, O bearer of death-news, to any land:
Do not announce his death, O herald, to a single land:
the East died when Zaghloul died.
The East died when Zaghloul died.

An Arab blade of Indian steel, possessed of noble worth;
An Arab sword of Indian steel, blunted by fate—
today the Arab East lies blunted.
So the Arab East today is blunted.
وايand what سيفٍsword كسعدٍlike Saad انتyou واجدهfinding it

What sword like Saad will you ever find—
And what sword like Saad could you find?
as though he were drawn from among the swords of God?
As though he were drawn from among the swords of God.

Egypt unsheathed him against the great ordeal and charged with him,
Egypt unsheathed him, charging with him against calamity,
in days when every drop of blood in the East lay unavenged;
In days when all blood in the East went unavenged;
أيامin days when للغربfor the West فيهاin her مطمعٌa covetous desire زحفتadvanced

days when the West coveted her, and for that prize
In days when the West coveted her, and there advanced
armies and fleets advanced against her.
Against her, driven by that desire, armies and fleets.
فلمso did not ينلreach مستبيحan invader منany of محارمهاher sanctities
ولاnor سقىgave drink to طامعاًone coveting فيin نيلهاpossessing her النيلthe Nile
Yet no profaning invader attained any of her sanctities,
So no invader violated her sanctities,
nor did the Nile give drink to one thirsting to possess her.
Nor did the Nile give drink to anyone bent on possessing her.
