  1. يا أيها الغادي

    يمشي إلى الوادي

    O you who set out in the morning,

    walking to the valley,

  2. يسعى إلى سلوى

    في ظله الهادي

    seeking solace

    in its tranquil shade,

  3. ماذا ترى فيه

    غير الأسى البادي

    what do you see in it

    but manifest sorrow?

  4. ألروض عراه

    تشرينه العادي

    The garden has been stripped bare

    by its ravaging Tishrin,

  5. والأيك خلاه

    قمريه الشادي

    and the grove has been deserted

    by its singing turtledove.

  6. مالت عن الوادي

    أيام أعيادِ

    Gone from the valley

    are the days of festivity.

  7. لا دقُّ اقداحٍ

    لا ضرب أعوادِ

    No clinking of goblets,

    no strumming of lutes.

  8. إِن تقرب الباكي

    ابكاكَ يا عادي

    If you approach the weeping one,

    he will make you weep, O passerby.
