And I am not poor, Thurayya, for I am

    rich in my dreams, rich in my hopes;

rich in my poetry, which is greater in worth

than wealth in my eyes, and stronger than wealth.

When I send my wandering verses into the dark of night,

the stars of night bow down to kiss my trailing hems.

And if I unleash my untamed verses in the morning light,

the sun flings herself toward me from her lofty tower.

Through my poetry I attain all that is beyond the reach

of a prince of high rank or a keeper of precious gold.

But the dearest thing I have gained through it

is your love—and who can match me, when you are my Thurayya?

Through you I am the richest of men, the highest of the exalted.

I am blessed, envied for my lot because of you.

By your life, wealth on earth is destined for decay,

but my poetry is immortal, never to decay.
