على الناس لم يسلم من اليأس واحدُ
I endure a grief—were some of it divided
among the people, not one would escape despair.

وأكتمُ عن قومي وصحبي بوارحي

ويعلم ربي وحده ما أكابد
And I conceal my torments from my people and my friends,
and my Lord alone knows what I endure.

مصاعب منها ان تذل الفراقد
I see humiliation in complaint; between me and abasement
stand obstacles, among them the humbling of the Farqad stars.

And can complaint help a young man encircled
by the eyes of calamities and envious eyes?

By your life, Lebanon is not the homeland
on whose soil the springs run clear for one like me.

I search there and see none but those who bear grudges
against me, though my heart bears none against others.

My fate is baffled in pursuing me, and sees no
mark its arrow can reach in the one it hunts.

وقد فشلت آفاته والمكايدُ
I held firm until despair turned away, thwarted,
and its scourges and schemes had failed.

I shall leave Lebanon on the day of my death,
and it will be left with its idols and boulders.
