Her mother said to us, “You two have spent a long time

meeting this way, and the gossip has gone on and on.

At every gathering there is talk of your love,

talk of reproach, and everyone chides you.

If Qays and Layla were an example of love,

then you two are examples of love’s madness.

My people learned of your affair, and it was denounced

by Thurayya’s father; the paternal and maternal uncles clamored.

And poetry about you has spread, sung by all,

bringing pain and humiliation to the soul.

And the poetry is yours, you madman; you spread it

shamelessly, and when they sing it, you swagger.

Thurayya will surely learn that her vessel

sails on, and tomorrow holds storms and terrors.

What harm if God’s law were established between you?

And in marriage, life is sweet and the mind at ease.”

So Thurayya answered her in anger:

“Put aside your worries; worry is a killer.

It pleases me that the ill-wishers clamor, even if

tales and talk about us spread,

and that the singer sings our poetry, which holds

    colors and forms of shamelessness.

If there is harm in our situation that befalls us,

then this situation harms no one else.

I stay beside my beloved, even if they roar

around me—lions and cubs from among my kin.

This is my share of this world; I am content with it,

and it is happiness, and it is soul and wealth.”
