Am I not one of the people you know,

who are humbled in want and debased if they love?

It is easy for me to spend my life hungry,

with hungry and thirsty family around me.

Nor will I accept food unless I have for it

payment in my hand, from the money I have earned.

And easier than that is your turning away and cutting me off,

and fires sweeping through me between my ribs.

Nor will I betray my nature, which rejects love

whenever one person enslaves another in love.

For I belong to a people stern when stern is

their companion; if their companion is gentle with them, they are gentle.

We are both dust, Thurayya, so temper

your arrogance, for in love there is neither slave nor sovereign.

Suppose you are the heavenly spirit by origin,

    Paradise your cradle, and the angels your brothers;

then, O angel, O son of angels, cast a glance

toward me, not askance, for I am no devil.
