Stand, clasp the beloved homeland's hand, and call:

The people are my people, and the land is my land.

And put on your coats of mail: they remain as

you left them—rings of mail fashioned from hearts.

where calamities struck because of your departure.

the sons of Ya‘rub is its ravaging of the tongue of Ḍād.

Do you not see her, mother of the noblest nation,

driven to a grave along with her children?

The intruder took hold of her, and nothing of hers was safe

from his twofold foreignness—no council or assembly hall.

Pardon me, father of orphans: these are ill omens

that appeared in the sky of joy's auspicious omens.

Pardon me: this is no occasion for them,

at the festival of your return, the loveliest of festivals.

A festival the orphan celebrates, his gaze

radiant, and his tongue singing for you.

And the institutions of charity scatter their flowers,

rejoicing in their Arif, the generous young man.

Their nightingales sang, and their spreading trees clapped,

in rapture at the water's return to those who come to drink.

Indeed, the orphans' spirit had left them

at your departure, then returned to their bodies.

And beloved friends around Arif—if he called,

every proud, self-sacrificing man among them answered him.

guards surrounding the noblest of commanders.

they stood beside the surging sea, keeping watch,

welcoming at the moorings their spirit,

restored to them after a long separation.

with radiant deeds and acts of generosity:

the throne of hearts—and what throne like it

have kings ascended through the might of armies?

One who seeks, with an army, to conquer strongholds is not

like one who seeks, through generosity, to win a heart.

Hail, O hope of the land, sheltered

by the land's hearts, for fear of the envious.

They did exile you; and it is the way of swords

not to remain captives of their scabbards.

The return is more welcome: indeed, Ka‘b has returned from

his place of exile; let Su‘ad's heart rejoice.
