وليand I have وطنٌa homeland قنعتُI was content بهwith it صغيراًsmall
علىon condition أنthat لاnot يهونbe humbled لمستبدbefore a tyrant
And I have a homeland, small though it is, with which I am content,
I have a small homeland I was content with
Provided it is not humbled before a tyrant.
Provided no despot brings it shame
وبئسand wretched is العيشُlife فيin وطنٍa homeland كبيرٍlarge
إذاif كانتis ولايتهits rule لوغدِto a scoundrel
And wretched is life in a large homeland
How miserable to live in a large homeland
If its rule belongs to a scoundrel.
If it were in the grip of a rogue
أعدbring back ذكرىthe memory القديمthe old عليَّto me انيindeed I

احنُّI yearn إلىfor القديمthe old بكلwith all وجديmy passion
Bring back to me the memory of the old homeland, for I
The past returns to mind, and I
Yearn for the old homeland with all my passion.
Yearn for the past with all my soul
ففيfor in الوطنthe homeland القديمold طويتُI folded up سعديmy happiness
وفيand in الوطنthe homeland الجديدnew نشرتI spread out نكديmy misery
For in the old homeland I folded up my happiness,
In that old homeland I found my joy
And in the new homeland I spread out my misery.
In this new one I reap distress
وفيand on الجبلthe mountain الأشمِّlofty حفظتI guarded هنداًHind
وفيand on شطthe shore الخضمthe vast sea اضعتI lost هنديmy Hind
And on the lofty mountain I guarded Hind,
In the highland I tended love
And on the shore of the vast sea I lost my Hind.
By the estuary I lost what I cherished
وكانand was ليfor me اليراعthe reed pen يراعُa reed pen حرٍa free man
فصارthen became ليfor me اليراعُthe reed pen يراعُa reed pen عبدa slave
And my reed pen was the reed pen of a free man,
I had a meadow that grazed the free
Then my reed pen became the reed pen of a slave.
Now my meadow grazes slaves
دعوتI called upon الموتdeath ينقذنيto rescue me وقوميand my people
فانso if لمnot يرضَconsent قوميmy people متُّI shall die وحديalone
I called on death to rescue me and my people,
I called on death to rescue me and my people
So if my people do not consent, I shall die alone.
If my people did not satisfy, I die alone

And I envy all those who died before me
And I mourn everyone who will live after me.
And mourn all those who live after me
