O you who spitefully gloat over

us, when our times brought upon us what they did,

    قد نجونا بعرضنا وكفانا

    It did not harm us that we suffered and died;

We escaped with our honor intact, and that sufficed us.

O you who feed your horses whea-

t, while our children gulp down darnel,

We went hungry but were not dishonored, while another

had abundant provisions in his hands, yet was dishonored.

O you who strut proudly in silk,

We are a people who prefer burial shrouds.

Whoever wears fine silk has no

covering if his honor is naked.

O you who ransom your lives with hon-

or, entrusting its care to Satan,

You have protected them—your lives—while we have sacrificed ours

    to protect honor and homelands.
