أَلَستَ تَخشَى تَقَارُبَ الأَجَلِ
What ails you, Waddah, forever speaking of love?
O Waddah, ever merry and jesting,
Do you not fear your appointed end drawing near?
Do you not fear the nearing of death?

Pray to the Lord of the Throne, and lay up merit
Pray to the Lord of the Throne and take steps
to save you on the day of stumbling and slipping.
That will save you on the day of stumbling and slipping.

O Death, you never cease standing in the way
O Death, you still stand in the way
of one who hopes, before his hope is fulfilled.
Of every hopeful, however long their hope.

If one who fled from you could escape,
If one who fled from you escaped,
then I would surely hasten the camel's journey.
Then I would hasten the pace of my camel.

But your hands have reached the length
what the finest camels fail to reach.
Of all, no matter how far the camel litters.

Your two hands reach every dweller on the plains,
Your hands seize every one who travels
and a fish in the sea, and the ibex's refuge.
And whale of the sea and lion of the thicket.

I have come to tremble from fear of them—
Become from that fear always apprehensive and anxious.

I would follow my heart in love;
I would have been a lover of the heart in passion;
indeed, its desire is for maidens reared in curtained chambers.
For its passion is the darling of the thickets.

An old jealous man rules, sick with illnesses.

She parts her lips in speech she bestows sparingly,
She prattles ineloquently but I am pleased with her prattle,
flowing as sweet saliva, like melted honey.
Flowing gently like the running of honey.
