My heart yearned and leaned toward you in longing;
and your phantom kept me sleepless, O Uthayla.

دَقيقَdelicate مَحَاسنٍcharms وَتُكِنُّand conceals غَيلاtreachery

A Yemeni woman visits us and reveals
delicate charms, yet conceals treachery.

free of the phantom that visits by night.

when our riding camels head toward Suhayl.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لَوif رَأَيتِyou saw الخَيلَthe horses تَعدُوgallop
فَإِنَّكَ لَو رَأَيتِ الخَيلَ تَعدُو
سِرَاعاًswiftly يَتَّخِذنَthey take النَقعَthe dust ذَيلاa trailing hem
سِرَاعاً يَتَّخِذنَ النَقعَ ذَيلا
For if you saw the horses galloping
swiftly, making the dust their trailing hem,
إِذَاًthen لَرَأَيتِyou would surely see فَوقَatop الخَيلِthe horses أُسدَاًlions
إِذَاً لَرَأَيتِ فَوقَ الخَيلِ أُسدَاً

تُفِيدُ مَغَانِماً وتُفِيتُ نَيلا
then you would surely see lions atop the horses,
winning spoils and thwarting others' gains.

When al-Walid leads us forth and we march
toward cavalry, entangling cavalry with them,

وَنُعقِبُ آخرينَ أَذىً وَوَيلا
and enter with joy the dwellings of some people,
and leave others with harm and woe.
