أَغَدَوتَhave you set out in the morning? أَمor فيamong الرَّائحينthose departing in the evening تَرُوحُyou depart in the evening
أَمor أَنتَyou مِنfrom ذِكرِremembering الحِسانِthe beautiful women صَحيحُuntroubled
Have you set out in the morning, or do you go with those departing at evening?
Did you rise early or are you wandering in the meadows?
Or are you untroubled by thoughts of beautiful women?
Or are you in good health from the memory of past love?
إِذwhen قَالَتِsaid الحَسنَاءُthe beautiful woman ماwhat لِصَدِيقِناwith our friend
رثَّragged الثيابِthe clothes وإنَّهthough he is لمَلِيحُindeed handsome
When the beautiful woman said, “Why is our friend
When the beautiful one said, "What is wrong with our friend?
Raggedly dressed, though he is indeed handsome?”
His clothes are worn and yet he looks so handsome."
لاdo not تَسأَلِنَّever ask عنِabout الثِّيابِthe clothes فَإِنَّنيfor I
يومَon the day of اللِّقَاءِbattle علىagainst الكُماةِthe armored warriors مُشِيحُresolute in combat
Do not ask about the clothes, for I
Do not ask about the clothes, for when we meet
Am resolute against the armored warriors on the day of battle.
I will be leaning languidly on the sand dunes.
أَرمِيI shoot وَأَطعَنُand I thrust ثُمَّthen أُتِبعُI follow up with ضَربَةًa blow
تَدَعُleaves النساءَthe women علىover الرجالِthe men تَنُوحُwailing
I shoot and thrust, then follow up with a blow
I hurl my spear, then follow with a blow
That leaves the women wailing over the men.
That leaves the women weeping over the men.
