O daughter of al-Wahid, be generous, for

If you forsake me, for what reason, or why?

Be generous to us today, or explain

Why you killed the Muslim man.

Indeed, I swear by the forelegs of lean young she-camels,

And every generous man who came to the pilgrimage gathering:

My heart was never so enthralled as by her,

As she rested a hand above a wrist.

Mistress of an upper chamber—when I come to her,

I cannot meet her unless I climb a ladder.

Her brothers are four, and all of them

Drive away from her the horseman bearing battle insignia.

How can I hope for her, when barring the way is

A vile doorkeeper, quick with abuse—

A black man, tearing at the honor of whoever

Passes by the gates or offers a greeting?

I know of no favor she has done

For me; nor does she seek blood vengeance among us.

Rather, when she saw a lover—

A lovesick man—she shot him today with the other archers.

When we shot at each other, and she saw that she

Had lodged her arrows in his heart,

That delighted her, so she revealed to him

Her white face and her wrist.

She rose to show herself to me, short though she was,

    Among shy maidens, like dolls,

And she knots her wrap over ample haunches,

Like a dune of sand, or greater still.
