صَدَعَ البَينُ والتفَرّقُ قَلبي

صَدَعَ البَينُ والتفَرّقُ قَلبي

وَتَولَّت أُمُّ البَنينِ بِلُّبِّي

وَتَولَّت أُمُّ البَنينِ بِلُّبِّي

Separation and sundering have riven my heart,

Separation and parting shattered my heart.

and Umm al-Banin departed, taking my reason with her.

And Umm al-Banin departed, taking my wits with her.

ثَوَتِ النَفسُ من الحُمولِ لَدَيها

ثَوَتِ النَفسُ من الحُمولِ لَدَيها

وَتَولَّى بالجِسمِ منّيَ صَحبي

وَتَولَّى بالجِسمِ منّيَ صَحبي

My soul remained beside her, among the camel litters,

My soul stayed with her among the laden camels,

while my companions carried my body away.

And my companions departed with my body.

وَلَقَد قُلتُ وَالمَدامعُ تَجري

وَلَقَد قُلتُ وَالمَدامعُ تَجري

بِدُمُوعٍ كَأنَّهَا فَيضُ غَربِ

بِدُمُوعٍ كَأنَّهَا فَيضُ غَربِ

And I said, as my eyes streamed

And indeed I said, while my eyes streamed

with tears like the overflow of a brimming bucket,

With tears like the overflow of a large bucket,

جَزَعاً لِلفراقِ يَومَ تَوَلَّت

جَزَعاً لِلفراقِ يَومَ تَوَلَّت

حَسِبيَ الله ذو المَعَارجِ حَسبِي

حَسِبيَ الله ذو المَعَارجِ حَسبِي

in anguish at parting, on the day she departed:

In anguish at parting, on the day she departed:

“God, Lord of the Ascents, is enough for me—enough.”

God, Lord of the ways of ascent, is enough for me—enough for me.
