Yours is my obedience, whether I am content or resentful,

and I guard your secret, whether hopeful or despairing.

And when the tale-bearers try to draw news of you from me,

they find me jealously guarding your secret, indignant.

Those who reproach me over you meet an ear turned away

from them, and a heart steadfast against blame.

And remembrance of you stirs a rising sigh,

drawing forth with its blaze falling tears.

O you who forsake me, whose phantom came to my slumber,

making amends through reunion for a past estrangement.

If the tale-bearers knew for certain my share of you

and my longing for you, they would gladden the one who envies me.
