    Your returning apparition remembered fidelity,

    So it paid a visit, though doubtful of our love.

    مُتَعَتِّبٍ عندي له الإعتابُ

    My soul be your ransom, O visiting apparition,

    Reproachful, whose grievance I can redress;

    Peering out like the full moon behind its veil—

    And even in sleep, is there a veil over you?

    I disavowed my forsaking you, while time, in its injustice,

    Decrees that lovers abandon one another.

    وإذا اقْتُسِرتُ فما عليَّ عتابُ

    Fidelity forbade me to forsake you willingly;

    And if I am compelled, no reproach falls on me.

    My love—as you knew it when our dwellings were near,

    Before the bonds were severed—

    Is steadfast: long visits take nothing

    From it, nor do visits at intervals increase it.
