    When the press of battle grows too narrow for Khattī spears,

    And death makes the clash of blades against skulls terrifying,

    Ask death about me; it will testify that I

    Enter its depths in war with unwavering resolve.

    O Muʿīn al-Dīn, how many collars of favor you have

    Placed around my neck, like the rings around a dove's.

    وفِي الإحسان رقٌّ لِلكرَامِ

    Your kindness has willingly made me your servant;

    Kindness holds even the noble in bondage.

    Thus my allegiance has come to rest in affection for you,

    Though I have inherited honor and earned my own.

    To you, every archer has aimed at my person?

    To force without first letting the sword make its case.

    But I feared the fire of enemies

    Would reach you, so I set about quenching the blaze.

    فَمَنْ حاتِمٌ ما نال ذا الفخرَ حاتِمُ

    Excellence and noble deeds are yours above all people;

    Who is Ḥātim? Even Ḥātim never attained this glory.

    You struck, and swords feared your might.

    You were generous despite the stinginess of time; where are

    The pouring clouds beside your abundant gifts?

    You pledged to Islam that you would defend

    Resolve whose reach no other resolve has attained.

    And blows to necks; righteous deeds are its pillars.

    And your generosity gives away what seals keep shut.

    Riding lean horses and driving unwilling death before them.

    They made even the mountain passes narrow for the enemy.

    ولِلدَّمِ وَبْلٌ والنّباتُ جَماجِمُ

    Dust makes clouds, and swords make flashes of lightning;

    Blood pours like rain, and skulls are the growth it brings.

    أشائِمُ لا يَروَى بها الدَّهرَ شائِمُ

    From those flashes one hopes for rescue, not rain;

    They are ill omens that will never slake the thirst of one who watches them.

    Along with tall, dark spears; whole lands are the spoils.
