أَوطَانَهَاits lands ونَبَتْand were inhospitable بهِto him أوطَانُهُhis native lands
This is the letter of a young man whom separation has settled
This is the book of a young man whose determination took him far from home
in its own lands, while his native lands have spurned him.
And in it grew his new homelands
شَطَّتْgrew distant بهwith him عمّنfrom those whom يُحبُّhe loves دِيارُهُhis dwellings

His dwellings have carried him far from those he loves,
It tells of how he parted from his beloved homeland
and his brethren have scattered like the people of Sheba.
And how he was separated from the hands of his dear brothers

His sighs come one after another; between his ribs
With sighs coming continuously from his breast
is a heart whose beating reveals its secret.
A heart that reveals its secrets in its throbbing

وتَذودُهُand drive him away عنfrom نَومهِhis sleep أَشجَانُهُhis sorrows
His cares seek refuge with him as darkness falls,
His worries come to him with the darkness
and his sorrows keep him from his sleep.
And his sorrows keep him from sleep

His steeds are accustomed to clashing with armored warriors,
His steeds are accustomed to battling heroes
and journeying through midday heat; his brisk pace never slackens.
And the continuance of travel does not weary them
يومَانِtwo days أجمَعُthe entirety of دهرِهِhis lifetime إِمّاeither سُرىًnight travel
أوor يَومُa day of حَربٍwar تَلتَظيblaze نِيرانُهُits fires
His whole life is two kinds of day: either a night march,
For two days make up his whole life
or a day of war whose fires blaze.
Either traveling or a day of war with its fires burning
لكنَّهbut he لاnot يستكينُyields لحَادِثٍِto a calamity

But he does not yield to misfortune
But he does not flinch from disasters
for fear of death, nor is his heart dismayed.
He fears not the attacks of enemies nor cares for their threats
