    ومالَت بهم عَنّا خُطوبٌ وأقدارُ

    They drew away, though our dwelling lay not far from them;

And calamities and fates turned them away from us.

They are my neighbors, yet distance lies between me and them,

And strangest of all is the distance of one who is my neighbor.

They shall have amends from me whenever they find fault,

And freely given satisfaction, whether they treat me fairly or wrong me.

O neighbors of my heart, and you for whom my love

Is the same in open avowal and in secrecy:

You think that patience will aid me after your departure,

In bearing your distance—far from it! My patience is a deceiver.

Whenever remembrance of you comes to mind, intoxication seizes me,

As though a wine-seller had given me Babylonian wine to drink.

I guarded my love for you as an eyelid guards an eye,

Yet affections and secrets were lost in your keeping.

And it is a disgrace to you that weariness should seize you,

Yet far be it that disgrace should stain my love for you!

I reproach you, hoping for the tenderness of your affection,

Yet you persist in what warranted reproach.

And how strange that I lay awake for one asleep,

And a betrayer bound me to preserve affection.

Was it when my heart was enslaved and passion led me captive,

And the allies of my steadfast patience had abandoned me,

That he set about rejecting me, and weariness seized him,

Decreeing my banishment—and weariness comes in phases?

Then why not when my tears' reserves had not yet been poured out,

And fire had not yet been kindled in the recesses of my heart?
