حَمَلَتْbore ثِقْلِيَmy weight فيon السَّهلِlevel ground العَصَاthe staff
حَمَلَتْ ثِقْلِيَ في السَّهلِ العَصَا
ونَبتْand failed بيon me حينَwhen حاولتُI attempted الحُزونَاthe rugged terrain
ونَبتْ بي حينَ حاولتُ الحُزونَا
The staff bore my weight on level ground,
My stick bore my burden on the plain
But failed me when I tried the rugged terrain.
And sprouted in me when I tried to grieve
وإذاand if رجليَmy leg خانَتْنيbetrays me فَلاthen no
وإذا رجليَ خانَتْني فَلا
لومَblame عنديin my view للعصاfor the staff فيin أنthat تَخونَاit should betray
لومَ عندي للعصا في أن تَخونَا
And if my leg betrays me, there is no
And if my feet betrayed me, no
Blame, in my eyes, on the staff for betraying me.
Blame have I for the stick if it proved false
