The changing fortunes of time have taught me
The turns of fate have taught me well,
to bear sorrow gracefully amid the calamities that befall.
And sorrow's beauty, when misfortunes fell,
إذاwhen حلdescends ماwhat لاnot يستطاعis possible دفاعهwarding it off
إذا حل ما لا يستطاع دفاعه
فماthen how أجملfitting الصبرpatience الجميلnoble بذيfor one possessing اللبunderstanding
فما أجمل الصبر الجميل بذي اللب
When what cannot be warded off descends,
For when assailed by fates beyond control,
then how fitting noble patience is for one of understanding!
How sweet is calm endurance to the soul!
