قُلْsay للخُطوبِto adversities إليكِaway with you عنّيfrom me إنّindeed ليI have
قُلْ للخُطوبِ إليكِ عنّي إنّ لي
فيin الخَطبِadversity عَزْمَاa resolve مثلَlike حدِّthe edge of المُنْصُلِthe sword
في الخَطبِ عَزْمَا مثلَ حدِّ المُنْصُلِ
Tell adversities: Away from me, for I have
Tell troubles coming to you from me that I
In adversity a resolve like the edge of a sword.
In troubles have determination like the edge of an Indian sword
لاnot يستكِينُyields لحادثٍto a blow مِنof نكبةٍmisfortune
لا يستكِينُ لحادثٍ مِن نكبةٍ
طرَقَتْhas struck ولاnor يَعياis baffled بأمرٍby a matter مُشكِلِdifficult
طرَقَتْ ولا يَعيا بأمرٍ مُشكِلِ
It yields to no blow of misfortune
Unshaken by any misfortune that has struck
That strikes, nor is it baffled by a difficult matter.
Nor perplexed by any difficult matter
يَلقىmeets الخطوبَadversities إذاwhen دَجَتgrow dark أهوالُهاtheir terrors
يَلقى الخطوبَ إذا دَجَت أهوالُها
بالصّبرِwith patience حتىuntil تَضمَحِلُّdwindle away وتَنجلِيand clear away
بالصّبرِ حتى تَضمَحِلُّ وتَنجلِي
It meets adversities when their terrors grow dark
It meets troubles when their horrors thicken
With patience, until they dwindle and clear away.
With patience until they subside and clear away
تنجابُfall away عنهfrom him الحادثاتُcalamities إذاwhen عَرتْstrike
تنجابُ عنه الحادثاتُ إذا عَرتْ
عنfrom قُلَّبٍone shrewd ثبْتِsteadfast in العزائِمِresolve حُوَّلِresourceful
عن قُلَّبٍ ثبْتِ العزائِمِ حُوَّلِ
Calamities fall away from him when they strike—
Misfortunes shy away from it when they expose
From one shrewd, steadfast in resolve, and resourceful.
A heart steadfast in purpose and resolute
قدalready جرّبَtested الأيامَthe days حتىuntil خِلتَهyou thought him
قد جرّبَ الأيامَ حتى خِلتَه
يُبديreveals لهto him الماضيthe past خَفِيَّwhat is hidden in المُقبِلِthe future
يُبدي له الماضي خَفِيَّ المُقبِلِ
He has tested the days until you would think
It has experienced days until their familiarity
The past reveals to him what is hidden in the future.
