أراهُم إذا فَرّوا من الموتِ أجهَلاَ
Some men deem my judgment in charging foolish;
My opinion's confused by companions
I deem them more foolish when they flee from death.
Who when they flee from death seem most ignorant

Does a young man hope, when his life comes to an end,
Can the youth expect when his life is done
for an escape, even if he flees death's watering place?
That he'll escape the unavoidable appointment?

فلا وجَدَتْ نفسي من الموتِ مَوئِلا
If I fear death in the thick of battle,
When I face death in the fury of battle
then may my soul find no refuge from death.
My soul won't escape its inescapable fate
وإنّيand indeed I إذاwhen نازلتُI faced in combat كَبشَa ram (champion) of كَتيبةٍa battalion

And indeed, when I face a battalion's ram—its champion—,
And if I fight a champion warrior
then I do not care which of us dies first.
I care not who dies first in the fray
