أحبَابَنَاour beloved ones ليfor me عندَat خَطْرةِa passing thought ذِكرِكُمremembrance of you
نَفَسٌa sigh تَقومُrise لهin response to it حنَاياthe arches of أضلُعِيmy ribs
Our beloved ones, at a passing thought of you, I have
Whenever your memory stirs,
A sigh at which the arches of my ribs rise.
My ribs quiver as my sorrow rises anew,
I was made to forget بَعدَكُمُin your absence السرورَjoy وأنكَرَتْand rejected
عَيْنِيmy eye الكَرىsleep ونَباand proved uncomfortable بِجَنبيfor my side مَضْجَعِيmy bed
In your absence I was made to forget joy, and
After you left, joy has fled,
My eye rejected sleep, and my bed gave my side no comfort.
My eyes reject rest, tossing sleepless in my bed.
ألْقَىI greet نَسيمَthe breeze of الرّيحِthe wind منfrom تِلقَائِكُمyour direction
بخُفُوتِwith the faint voice of مكرُوبٍone distressed وأنّةِand the moan of مَوجَعِone in pain
I greet the wind's breeze from your direction
The breeze carries your scent,
With the faint voice of one distressed and the moan of one in pain.
Sickly sweet, racking my wounded heart,
وإذاand when السحابُthe clouds سَرىtravel by night فَنَارُthen the fire of بُروقِهtheir lightning flashes
منfrom زَفْرتيmy deep sigh ومياهُهand their waters منfrom أدْمُعيmy tears
And when the clouds travel by night, the fire of their lightning
When clouds drift by, their lightning’s flare,
Comes from my deep sigh, and their waters from my tears.
Is my anguished sigh, their rain, my tears.
