فيهِ المَؤمِّلُ للتّقاضِي مَوضِعَا
O you who promise me union—a promise offering no
O my promise of union, a promise without fulfillment
Ground for the hopeful to demand fulfillment.
In which the hopeful finds no place for requital

In my love for you, I have become like one calling to an echo,
I have become, in my love for you, like one who calls out his echo
Whose only portion is to hear.
With no fortune save that his call may be heard
لكنَّbut حظَّthe share هَواكَlove for you منfrom جِسميmy body ضَنىًwasting sickness
لكنَّ حظَّ هَواكَ من جِسمي ضَنىً

بَادٍ نَفَى نَومِي وأَفْنَى الأَدْمُعَا
Yet love for you takes its share from my body in wasting sickness,
Yet the fortune of your love has denied sustenance to my body
Plain to see—it banished my sleep and exhausted my tears.
Vanishing my sleep and drawing forth my tears
