أَيَا هاجراً كُلَّما زِدتُ في

أَيَا هاجراً كُلَّما زِدتُ في

خُضوعِي لَهُ زَادَ هِجرانُهُ

خُضوعِي لَهُ زَادَ هِجرانُهُ

O you who forsake me, whenever I grow in

O you who distance yourself, the more

my submission to him, his estrangement grows.

I submit to him, the more he distances himself

تَرفَّقْ بقلبٍ إذا ما ذُكرْتَ

تَرفَّقْ بقلبٍ إذا ما ذُكرْتَ

بَدا للمُحَدِّثِ كِتمانُهُ

بَدا للمُحَدِّثِ كِتمانُهُ

Be gentle with a heart: whenever you are mentioned,

Have mercy on a heart, if you are mentioned

what it conceals becomes plain to the speaker.

To the speaker, its secret appears

مَحلَّكَ مِنهُ مَحَلَّ السَّوادِ

مَحلَّكَ مِنهُ مَحَلَّ السَّوادِ

مِن ناظِرٍ أَنتَ إِنسانُهُ

مِن ناظِرٍ أَنتَ إِنسانُهُ

Your place within it is that of the black center

Your place with him is like that of the pupil

of an eye whose pupil you are.

To the beholder, you are its human
