ياO مدعيclaimant of الصبرpatience عنaway from أحبابهhis loved ones ولهyet he has
يا مدعي الصبر عن أحبابه وله
دمعtears إذاwhen حنhe yearns ذكراهمtheir memory تكذبهbelie him
دمع إذا حن ذكراهم تكذبه
O you who claim to bear separation from your loved ones, yet have
tears that belie you whenever their memory stirs your longing.
خلفتyou left behind قلبكyour heart فيin أرضthe land of الشآمal-Sham وقدand already
خلفت قلبك في أرض الشآم وقد
أصبحتyou have come to be فيin مصرEgypt ياO مغرورdeluded one تطلبهyou seek it
أصبحت في مصر يا مغرور تطلبه
You left your heart behind in the land of al-Sham, and now
you are in Egypt, deluded one, searching for it.
هلاwhy did you not غداةthe morning of النوىparting استصحبتهyou took it along وإذاand if اخ“chose” (first part)
هلا غداة النوى استصحبته وإذا اخ
تار“chose” (remaining part) المقامstaying فهلاthen why did you not كنتyou were تصحبهkeeping it company
تار المقام فهلا كنت تصحبه
Why did you not take it along on the morning of parting? And if it chose
to stay, why did you not keep it company?
أفردتهyou left it alone بالأسىwith sorrow فيin دارthe abode of غربتهits exile
أفردته بالأسى في دار غربته
وعدتand you returned لاmay you not عدتreturn تبكيهweep for it وتندبهand lament it
وعدت لا عدت تبكيه وتندبه
You left it alone with sorrow in the abode of its exile,
and returned—may you never return—to weep for it and lament it.
هيهاتfar beyond reach! قدalready حالتhave intervened الأيامthe days بينكماbetween you two
هيهات قد حالت الأيام بينكما
فعزso console نفسكyourself عماfor what عزis difficult مطلبهits attainment
فعز نفسك عما عز مطلبه
Alas! The days have come between you two.
So console yourself for what is difficult to attain.
