ياO مَنone who بهthrough him سَلْوَتيmy solace عنfor كُلِّevery مُفْتَقَدٍsomeone or something missed
ومَنand one who مودَّتُهُhis affection أدنَىcloser منthan النَّسَبِkinship
O you through whom I find solace for all I have lost,
O you in whom is my solace from all those I miss
And you whose affection is closer than kinship:
And whose affection is closer than kinship
شَكوتَyou complained همَّكَyour worry بيabout me لمَّاwhen اشتكيتُI fell ill فَلاso may ... not
زلتَyou cease to be المُوقّىprotected منfrom الآلامِpains والنّوَبِand calamities
You voiced your worry for me when I fell ill; may you never
You confided your concerns to me when I complained, so you
Cease to be shielded from pain and calamities.
Remain steadfast despite pains and afflictions
أبَّلَhas recovered جسمِيَmy body مِنfrom أوصَابِهits ailments وأَرَىand I see
قَلبيmy heart مِنfrom الهمِّsorrow لاnot ينفَكُّceases to be ذَاhaving وَصبِillness
My body has recovered from its ailments, yet I see
My body is weakened by its ailments, and I see
My heart still ailing from sorrow.
My heart cannot be freed from worries and sorrows
وداؤُهand its illness باطنٌinward لاno طِبَّmedicine يبلُغُهُreaches it
إنif لَمْnot يُدارِكْهُrescues it لطفٌkindness غيرُnot مُحتَسَبِanticipated
And its illness is inward; no medicine can reach it
Its malady is internal, no medicine can reach it
Unless unexpected kindness comes to its aid.
Unless helped by an unexpected kindness
وماand not الّذِيthat which نَالَهbefell it منfrom دائِهits illness عَجبُa wonder

And what its illness has inflicted on it is no wonder,
What has befallen him from his illness is not strange
But its survival is among the most wondrous of wonders.
But his well-being is among the greatest wonders
