أأحبَابَناO our beloved ones مُذْsince أفْرَدَتْنِيَparted me مِنكُمُfrom you
صُروفُvicissitudes اللّيالِيof the nights أفْرَدَتْنِيَleft me alone بالهَمِّwith grief
O our beloved ones, since I was parted from you,
O friends, since the nights parted me from you
The vicissitudes of the nights have left me alone with grief.
The whims of time have set me apart in sorrow
وحُمِّلتُand I was made to bear ثِقَلَthe burden الشوقof longing عنكُمin your stead وإنّنيand indeed I
I am indeed too weak عنfor حَملbearing التَشَوُّقِyearning والسّقْمِand sickness
And I was made to bear longing’s burden in your stead, though I
And I have been burdened with longing for you
Am indeed too weak to bear yearning and sickness.
Though I am too weak to bear intense yearning and sickness
كأنّيَas though I were عَودٌan old camel أوهَنweakened الثِّقلُthe load صحبَهhis companions
فردّواso they put back عليهupon him ثقْلَهُنّtheir load علىdespite رَغْمِunwillingness
I am like an old camel whose companions were weakened by the load;
As if I were a branch, made frail under a burden
So they put their load back upon him, against his will.
Take the burden back, though it weigh heavily on me
