O Abu Hasan, within the folds of every misfortune
O Abu Hasan, in the fold of every misfortune,
lies a gracious act from God for His servants.
There is kindness from God for His servants.
كرهتُI disliked لَكَfor you التِّرحالَdeparture أمسِyesterday وربَّماand sometimes
أفادَgranted الفتيthe young man طولَlength of المُقامِthe stay رَحيلُa departure
I disliked your departure yesterday; yet sometimes
Yesterday, I disliked your traveling, but perhaps
a departure brings a young man a long stay.
A youth will benefit from a long stay by departing.
وقدand sometimes يكرَهُdislikes الشيءَthe thing الفتىthe young man وهوand it is خَيرُهُhis good

A young man may dislike a thing, though it is good
A man may dislike something when it is better for him
for him, and love a thing, though it is harmful.
And like something when it is worthless.
ولوand even if لَمdid not تُفِدyou gain إلاّexcept الجِهَادَstriving in God's cause فإنّهthen indeed it is

Even if you gained nothing but striving in God's cause, it is
Even if you gain only jihad, its reward
a great reward, as the Book expressly states.
Is great, as the Book has described.
فكيفthen how وقدand indeed أصبحتَyou have become جاراًa neighbor لماجدٍto a noble man

How much more so, now that you have become a neighbor to a noble man,
How then, when you have become a neighbor of Majid,
who gives generously despite his troubles, and bestows gifts.
Who bestows on the eminent and gives freely?
كريمٍgenerous كليلِdim الطّرْفِthe eye عنwith regard to عيبِthe fault of جارِهhis neighbor

وماyet not طَرْفُهhis eye عِندat السّؤالِa request كلَيلُdim
Generous, his eye is dim to his neighbor's faults,
Noble, barely glancing at the faults of his neighbor.
yet his eye is not dim when a request is made.
His glance in requesting is not miserly.

He bought praise with wealth, seeking no release from
He bought praise with wealth, not content
his purchase, nor granting release when selling.
In buying it, nor stingy toward the seller.
ومَنْand who كمُعينِlike Muʿin الدِّينal-Din (the faith) أمّاas for جَنابُهhis precinct

And who is like Muʿin al-Din? As for his precinct,
He who helps the faith - his side
it is spacious; and as for his shade, it is sheltering.
Is vast, and his shade is shady.
إذاwhen وَرَدَتcame to drink at آمالُناour hopes بَحرَthe sea of جُودِهhis generosity
صَدَرنَthey departed روَاءًfully quenched ماno بِهنِّin them غَليلُburning thirst
When our hopes come to drink at the sea of his generosity,
When our hopes reach the sea of his generosity,
they depart fully quenched, with no burning thirst in them.
They draw fresh water with no brackishness.
فكُنْso be واثِقاًconfident باللهِin God ثمthen بِجُودِهin his generosity
فإنِّيfor indeed I بماfor what أمَّلتُI hoped for مِنهُfrom him كَفيلُa guarantor
So place your trust in God, then in his generosity,
So trust in God, then in his generosity,
for I stand surety for what I have hoped for from him.
For I guarantee what I hope from him.
