Nizam al-Din, how many a dear friend I have parted from,

and how often my entrails have burned in longing’s blaze!

Yet I did not lose heart at the sudden shocks of separation,

nor did I fear the terrors of parting.

And here I am, because you are far away, a companion to grief,

for which souls pour forth from the corners of the eyes.

I soothe my heart, throbbing with longing

for you, with hopes that the days of reunion are near.

Abu al-Harith, stay safe from the calamities of our time,

and from the heat of the breaths of one who yearns in separation.

I complain to you of parting: its swift coming

has struck every bone of mine with a gnawing affliction.

And I lost my sun, then began searching

for it, though it is setting in the land of the East.

    فيا ليَ من همّيْنِ غادٍ وطَارقِ

    I go forth at evening and morning amid cares that revisit me;

so alas for me, with two cares: one comes by morning, the other by night!
