دهريmy fate فعشتُso I lived وحيداًalone ميِّتاًdead كَمَدَاfrom grief
My peers and my brothers have passed away, and I was left alone
My companions and brothers have departed and left me alone,
by my fate; so I lived alone, dead with grief.
My fate isolated me and left me lifeless as a corpse.
وماand not أرىI see ليfor me بحُسنِwith good الصَّبرِpatience بَعْدَهُمُafter them
وإنand even if تجلَّدتُI steel myself خوفَfor fear of الشّامِتينthose who gloat يَداstrength
And I find that, for patient endurance after them—
I see no beauty in patience after losing them,
though I steel myself for fear of those who gloat—I have no strength.
Even if I feign fortitude, fearing the gloating hands.
والقَبرُand the grave أرفقُgentlest مسكونٍdwelling ونكْرهُهand we hate it
إذbecause كانwas يسكنُهdwells in it الإنسانُthe human being منفَرِدَاalone
And the grave is the gentlest dwelling, yet we hate it,
The grave is a kinder abode though we dread it,
for a human being dwells in it alone.
For it is inhabited by man in utter solitude.
