لِدَتِيmy peers وإخوانُand brothers الشَبابِyouth مضَوْاthey passed away
لِدَتِي وإخوانُ الشَبابِ مضَوْا
قَبليbefore me وكَمand how long منfrom بعدهمafter them أبْقَىshall I remain
قَبلي وكَم من بعدهم أبْقَى
My peers and brothers of youth have passed away
My peers and companions of youth are gone
Before me—and how long shall I remain after them?
Before me, and how many after them remain
كُنّاwe were كأفْراسِlike horses الرّهانِthe race جَرَوْاthey ran
كُنّا كأفْراسِ الرّهانِ جَرَوْا
فيin غَايةٍa finish line فتقدَّمُواso they advanced سَبْقَاin the lead
في غَايةٍ فتقدَّمُوا سَبْقَا
We were like racehorses that ran
We were like racehorses running
Toward a finish line, and they raced ahead.
To the goal, they went ahead in the race
وهُمُand they إذاwhen بلغُواthey reach المدَىthe end وقَفُواthey stop
وهُمُ إذا بلغُوا المدَى وقَفُوا
حتىuntil تَضُمَّgathers الحلْبَةُthe racecourse الخَلْقَاall creation
حتى تَضُمَّ الحلْبَةُ الخَلْقَا
And when they reach the end, they stop
And when they reached the end point, they stopped
Until the racecourse gathers all creation.
