My legs and seventy years have sapped

my strength for hastening to war.

And whenever battle’s herald renewed his call,

I would answer him with thrusts and blows.

With the sword I cleave the darkness of its dust-cloud,

as a loosed meteor cleaves the dark of night.

I face my equals in combat; they are felled

by dread of me before I strike their heads.

So the nights have left nothing of me but

my patience in hardship and calamity.

I meet calamities, steadfast of heart amid

their upheavals, with my mind collected.

My resolve has not betrayed me, nor have I been denied

my patience; nor has my heart quailed before them.
