مُواصَلَتِيmy continuing كُتِبيmy letters إليكَto you تَزيدُنيincreases in me
إليكَfor you اشتياقاًlonging بلrather عليكَover you تأسُّفَاsorrow
My continued sending of letters to you increases in me
My writing to you increases my yearning
Longing for you—rather, sorrow over you.
For you, even more sorrowful longing
وليand I have أُسوةٌa consoling example فيamong النّاسِpeople لوif نَفَعَhelped الأُسىthe consoling examples
فَمِنfor, from قَبلِنَاbefore us يَعقوبُJacob فَارقَparted from يُوسُفَاJoseph
And I have a consoling example among people, if examples could help:
And though others model endurance against sadness
For before us, Jacob parted from Joseph.
Still Jacob was parted from Joseph of old
ولَكنّand yet نفسِيmy soul قدalready تملّكَهاhas taken possession of it الأسَىsorrow
وقَلبيand my heart إذاwhen سَكَّنتُهُI soothed it بالأسَىwith sorrow هَفَاfluttered
And yet sorrow has already taken possession of my soul;
Yet my soul is possessed by sorrow
And my heart, when I soothe it with sorrow, flutters.
And my heart finds peace only in grief
ومَاand not أحسَبُI think الأيّامَthe days تَقنُعare content بالنّوَىwith separation
ولاnor أنَّthat صَرفَthe vicissitudes الدّهرِof time بالفُرقةِwith parting اُشْتَفَىhas found satisfaction
And I do not think the days are content with separation,
Nor do I think the days will be calmed by forgetfulness
Nor that time's vicissitudes have found satisfaction in parting.
Nor the passage of fate be consoled by parting
