Let me speak openly; grief like mine cannot be denied.

Perhaps the embers within my ribs will die out.

I burden myself with concealing what I hold back,

Yet I have no power to achieve what I sought.

And my grief for those I parted from, but for my fortitude

—and how much does fortitude avail me?—

would be like Labid’s grief, or like Mutammim’s.

And who are Malik and Arbad beside those I have lost?
