إنّيِ وثِقتُ بأمرٍ غَرَّنِي أمَلِي
فيهِin it وقدand indeed قِيلit has been said كمhow many مِنof واثِقٍone who trusts خَجِلِashamed
فيهِ وقد قِيل كم مِن واثِقٍ خَجِلِ
Indeed, I trusted in a matter, beguiled by my hope
I have trusted in a matter that my hope has deceived me
In it—though it has been said: how many a trusting man has been ashamed!
And it is said how many who trust are disappointed
عادَتreturned إليَّto me الأمَانِيthe wishes مِنهُfrom it آيسَةًdespairing
عادَت إليَّ الأمَانِي مِنهُ آيسَةً
فياso, oh حيَاءَshame المنىthe wishes منat خَيبَةِdisappointment الأملِhope
فيا حيَاءَ المنى من خَيبَةِ الأملِ
My wishes returned to me from it, despairing.
My hopes in it have returned to me in despair
So, oh, the shame of wishes at hope’s disappointment!
Oh, the shame of wishes from the frustration of hope
