قَتلناwe killed بقتلانَاin return for our slain منfrom among القومthe people مثلَهُمas many as them
قَتلنا بقتلانَا من القوم مثلَهُم
مراراًtime and again ولكنand yet ماnot الدماءُblood سَواءُequal
مراراً ولكن ما الدماءُ سَواءُ
In return for our slain, we killed an equal number from among those people,
We have killed of their men as many as they killed of us, over and over,
time and again; but not all blood is equal.
Yet bloodshed cannot make bloodshed fair.
ولكنand yet شَفَيناwe healed النّفسthe soul منof لاعجِthe burning anguish of الأسَىgrief
ولكن شَفَينا النّفس من لاعجِ الأسَى
بقتلهمُby killing them إنif كانthere was منهfrom it شِفاءُhealing
بقتلهمُ إن كان منه شِفاءُ
Yet we relieved the soul of grief’s burning anguish,
But we have healed our souls of the festering wounds of sorrow
by killing them—if any healing could come of it.
By shedding their blood, if that could heal or help repair.
